Last updated November 1, 2026. JFK rules change often during construction. We check the official pages and update this guide when they change.
You land at JFK Terminal 5 after a long week away. You grab your bag, walk outside and look for your car. It is not at the curb. It has not been allowed at that curb since May 2025.
JFK is in the middle of a huge rebuild, and the rules for JFK pickup and drop-off keep shifting. Some terminals now send car pickups to a lot a train ride away. One terminal moved its drop-off into a parking garage in September.
This guide sorts it all out, terminal by terminal. It is written for travelers from Stamford and the rest of Fairfield County who ride to JFK by car service. You will know where to go before you leave home.

Getting Dropped Off at JFK, Terminal by Terminal
[Image: jfk-terminal-7-garage-drop-off.webp. See section 6.]
Leaving from JFK is still simpler than arriving. Most terminals allow curbside drop-off, but the curbs are for active drop-offs only. The JFK airport site says there is no parking in front of any terminal.
Terminals 1 and 4
Drivers reach Terminals 1 and 4 from the Van Wyck Expressway. Curbside drop-off still works at both. Expect work zones around Terminal 1, where the new terminal is being built next door.
Terminal 5 (JetBlue)
Good news for JetBlue flyers. The pickup rule at Terminal 5 does not affect departures. Your chauffeur can still drop you at the curb in front of the terminal.
Terminal 7
This is the newest change. Since September 22, 2026, Terminal 7 drop-offs happen inside the first level of the Terminal 7 parking garage. Private car pickups moved there too, along with the taxi stand. Larger vehicles, such as buses, use a separate area outside the garage.
Follow the posted signs to the garage, and plan a few extra minutes. If you fly from Terminal 7 often, this change will feel new for a while.
Terminal 8 (American)
Drivers reach Terminals 5, 7 and 8 from the JFK Expressway. Curbside drop-off at Terminal 8 works as it always has, but watch for detours on the way in.

Arriving at JFK, Where Your Car Service Meets You

Arrivals are where most of the confusion happens. The answer depends on your terminal.
The Terminal 5 and 7 Howard Beach Rule
Since May 2025, the rule at Terminals 5 and 7 has been clear. Arriving travelers who want a for-hire vehicle or car service must take the AirTrain to Howard Beach. The official JFK advisory calls it the Ride App and Car Services pickup lot.
- The AirTrain is free for trips inside the airport, including the ride to this lot.
- Staff and baggage handlers help travelers at the lot.
- Accessible rides for riders with a disability can still pick up in front of the terminal.
- Departures are not affected, as noted above.
With FinixLimo, your chauffeur tracks your flight and confirms the exact meeting point by text before you land. You will know where to walk before you even reach baggage claim.
Terminal 4 at Busy Hours
Terminal 4 is home to Delta. Local news and JFK’s own social posts report that ride app pickups shift to Lot 66 during busy hours. A free shuttle bus runs there from the terminal. The rule can change, so ask your driver where to meet before you land.
Terminals 1 and 8
At Terminals 1 and 8, car service pickups still happen near the terminal. Your chauffeur will tell you the exact spot when you land.
Meet and Greet Inside the Terminal
If you want the easiest arrival, ask for meet and greet. Your chauffeur waits inside the terminal with a name sign, helps with your bags and walks you to the car. It is a big help for families, older parents and anyone landing late at night. FinixLimo offers meet and greet on request.
If Your Flight Lands Early or Late
A car service that tracks your flight adjusts on its own. At FinixLimo Transportation LLC, pickup comes about 30 minutes after a domestic landing. For an international flight, it is about an hour. That leaves time for bags and customs.
What Is Opening Next, Terminal 6 and New Terminal One
[Image: jfk-new-terminal-construction-2026.webp. See section 6.]
Two big terminals are on the way. Both will change where some airlines fly from, so check your ticket before every trip.
The new Terminal 6 sits next to Terminal 5 and will connect to it. The Port Authority says its first gates open in 2026, with JetBlue as a lead partner. Terminal 7 keeps running until later phases of the work.
New Terminal One is replacing the old Terminal 1. It was meant to open in 2026. In September, The Points Guy reported that the first passengers are now expected in early 2027. The old building will close after the first phase opens.
How Much Extra Time to Allow From Fairfield County
The drive from Stamford to JFK takes a little under an hour on clear roads. At rush hour, it can stretch to 90 minutes or more. Construction at the airport adds its own delays on top of that.
- Start with your drive time from home, about an hour at quiet times.
- Add 20 to 30 minutes for traffic and construction near the terminals.
- Add another 15 minutes if you fly from Terminal 7, for the new garage drop-off.
- Add more for holiday weeks, such as Thanksgiving and the December break.
- Arrive two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one.

What to Do If You Can’t Find Your Car
Even with a plan, airports get busy. If you step outside and do not see your ride, stay calm and follow these steps.
- Check your phone for a text from your chauffeur with the meeting point.
- Look at your terminal number. At Terminals 5 and 7, head to the AirTrain for Howard Beach.
- Call your car service. A real person should answer, day or night.
- Stay inside or near the doors. Do not walk along the roadway to look for the car.
Rideshare or Car Service at JFK Right Now
The new rules hit rideshare riders hardest. At Terminals 5 and 7, you take the AirTrain to Howard Beach, then wait for a driver to accept your trip. Prices can jump when many flights land at once.
A car service booked with FinixLimo is already on its way before you land. Your chauffeur knows your flight, your terminal and the meeting point. Our guide to car service vs Uber compares both options in more detail.
Tips for a Smooth JFK Trip
- Check your terminal the day before. Airlines can move as new terminals open.
- Add your flight number when you book, so pickup follows any delay.
- Keep your phone on after landing, so you see your chauffeur’s message.
- Know that the AirTrain is free inside the airport, including to Howard Beach.
- If a friend is picking you up, they can wait free at the Cell Phone Lot or the Lefferts Boulevard Wait Lot.
- Book early for holiday weeks, when JFK is at its busiest.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Most JFK headaches come from old habits. Watch for these.
- Walking out to the Terminal 5 curb to look for your car.
- Planning a Terminal 7 drop-off at the old curb.
- Assuming your airline is still in the same terminal as last year.
- Leaving home on the same schedule you used before the construction.
- Booking a car without a flight number, so delays are not tracked.
